Nearly there! Last bits and pieces coming together now. I’ll leave Saturday evening from Carpinteria, drive through LA and stop for the night somewhere around Palm Springs or Indio, then head out on Sunday morning for Phoenix, where I’ll spend two nights with two childhood friends.
The Road
Thanks to EVERYONE who’s been posting comments and adding to the map! It’s very cool to see what’s what out there. Look at the map though; there’s a big gap of an area where no one’s posted any cool stuff to see or do! C’mon, there’s gotta be something interesting in that part of the country! And keep in mind, if you live along the way and want to introduce yourself, let me know! I’d love to meet some of you on this journey.
The Gear
A few changes in gear since I last wrote… I ended up buying the Amod AGL3080 GPS Logger instead of the one I mentioned below, because the Amod mounts as a mass storage device—meaning I won’t have to use another piece of software just to get the GPS logs off of it. It doesn’t have as many clever options (that I’d probably never use) as the other one, but the mass-storage thing is a big deal to me. And it didn’t hurt that it is $35 cheaper!
I also bought a new camera… oh yeah, a super high-tech plastic Holga 120N, baby!
Holga 120N… hey, why not!I can’t wait to see what I get out of this. I’ll send the roll film back to Samy’s for processing and scanning when I get to my destination. Love it.
The Results
So what am I gonna produce out of all this? I’ve been working on a few iPad wallpaper sets, and actually am going to *try* to release them before I leave tomorrow… and I’ll absolutely generate another pack out of this trip. I’m also working on another new eBook, something along the lines of “how to get the most out of your Canon camera”, and the fine folks over at BorrowLenses.com have loaned me a Canon EOS 40D and kit lens so I’m shooting for the eBook with a more “consumer” grade camera. They also have sent the fabulous Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L Mark II lens for my full-frame bodies. I can’t wait to give that one a run! Depending on the results, I my produce some kind of limited edition photo book. It’ll all depend on what I actually encounter on the road!
I’ll probably post again tomorrow before I leave, and of course will be adding photos and words to the blog as I go. Exciting times… follow along, be sure you’re following on Twitter as well @travel_junkie as I’ll post updates there throughout the journey!
